The Ultimate Summer Reading Bucket List for 7 year old boys | 10+ Books for Rising 2nd Graders

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

Summer is quickly approaching and while we are excited to put this remote learning school year behind us, I am preparing our summer learning plans to ensure Preston, Braxton, and Olivia have lots of active learning opportunities all summer long. One foundational part of the summer learning plans for all three kiddos are reading lots and lots of books. Please note, we earn commissions if you shop through the links below.

The ultimate summer reading list for 7 year old 2nd grade boys

For my seven-year-old rising second-grader, we will be using a reading habit tracker to begin to develop his skills as an independent, self-directed learner. The tracker will also help him set goals and work toward achieving them. To create his ultimate summer reading bucket list, he and I sat down together and searched the web to create this carefully curated list of reads that he found interesting. One critical aspect of cultivating life-long readers is to allow your child to select books that they find interesting. After they read a book, ask them questions that will build critical thinking skills, such as:

  • did you like the book?! Why or why not?

  • If you could change the ending, what would you change?

  • Which character was your favorite? Why?

If you are interested in using a reading habit tracker to help your child set, track and achieve their summer reading goals, you can download a FREE reading log habit tracker below.

Now, let's get into the list! We couldn't decide on just ten, so below are 13 of Preston's picks for books to read this summer. Most have some STEM focus, but others are about sports and even government. You can follow along with his progress in my Instagram Stories, @PBOinSTEM, where I will also share lots of ideas for fun ways to infuse STEM learning into your summer routine. For your convenience, you can find all of these books in our PBOinSTEM Amazon Store Front HERE.
